Siliguri Greenlights Sikkim Bus Terminus Project — Big Boost
The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has reissued approval for the long-pending Suswastha Bhawan Sikkim project, clearing the way for a multi-purpose facility aimed at supporting patients from Sikkim who travel to Siliguri for medical treatment. An official memorandum dated July 3 states the civic body granted an exemption for the building plan under the Government Buildings Act, 1899 for a proposed Basement + Ground + 10-storey bus terminus, healthcare and guest house complex at the Sikkim Nationalized Transport premises in Ward No. 3 within SMC jurisdiction.
The approval, signed by the SMC Commissioner and addressed to the Secretary of the Sikkim Transport Department, follows a communication from the Sikkim government dated March 12, 2025, which withdrew an earlier exemption. The fresh clearance refers to a proposal submitted by the Transport Department on December 5, 2024.
Planned as a combined transport and patient-support hub, the Suswastha Bhawan Sikkim is intended to provide accommodation and essential support facilities for Sikkimese patients seeking treatment in Siliguri, alongside a modern bus terminus to improve connectivity. The facility is described as addressing both healthcare access and regional transit needs.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang welcomed the reapproval, calling it “a major step towards strengthening regional cooperation and improving healthcare access for the people of the state,” and expressed gratitude to the West Bengal government for facilitating the project’s implementation.
The SMC noted the exemption was granted with the Administrator’s approval but stressed that the project must still comply with applicable laws and regulations before construction can begin. These include the West Bengal Municipal Corporation Act, 2006, the West Bengal Municipal (Building) Rules, 2007, and other statutory requirements.
