Unmissable Tuluni: Celebrate Sümi Naga Heritage in Tinsukia
The historic Longtong Sema Naga village in Assam’s Tinsukia district, under the 83 Margherita Legislative Assembly constituency, will celebrate the Tuluni festival on July 8, the principal agricultural festival of the Sümi (Sema) Naga community. Organized under the auspices of the All Assam Sema Naga Council, the mid-year event marks a season of abundance, prosperity and community fellowship, and is expected to draw members of the Sema Naga community from surrounding areas.
Tuluni, historically known as Anni, falls after crop sowing and before the harvest. Community elders say the festival is traditionally a time of thanksgiving and collective well-being, observed to give thanks for the year’s sowing and to seek blessings for the coming harvest.
The day-long programme will showcase the Sümi Nagas’ living cultural heritage. Participants will appear in deep maroon, black and white handwoven garments, wear intricate bead ornaments and don customary warrior headgear. Traditional rituals will be performed alongside indigenous folk songs and customary dances that have been passed down through generations.
Beyond its agricultural roots, Tuluni serves as a vital social forum. The festival traditionally offers an opportunity to resolve long-standing disputes, renew relationships and reinforce reconciliation within the community. Organisers say the celebrations are intended to promote and preserve the Sümi Naga cultural identity while encouraging younger generations to remain connected to their traditions.
Community leaders expressed confidence that this year’s celebration at Longtong Sema will bolster cultural awareness and reaffirm values of unity, heritage preservation and communal harmony.
