Assam Flood Crisis: Centre Assures Relief for 48,000+ Affected
Guwahati, July 2 — The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday, with more than 48,000 people affected across four districts as Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the Centre will provide all possible assistance for relief and rehabilitation. Chouhan and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju visited several inundated areas in Dhemaji district to assess the situation alongside Assam ministers Keshab Mahanta, Pijush Hazarika and Sushanta Buragohain, and senior state officials.
Earlier, the two Union ministers and Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora conducted an aerial survey of the worst-hit parts of Dhemaji, which shares a border with flood-affected Arunachal Pradesh. Officials reported widespread damage to homes and infrastructure, with roads washed away in several locations.
“The crisis is big, and we have seen the devastation. Houses have been damaged, and roads have been washed away. The priority is how to bring back normalcy and rebuild people’s daily life,” Chouhan told reporters in Dhemaji after interacting with affected families and reviewing relief operations.
Chouhan said the delegation reviewed the extent of damage and the ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures on the ground. He added that, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central government stands firmly with the people of Assam and is committed to extending every possible support for relief, recovery and rebuilding.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) daily flood report, nearly 48,500 people have been impacted in Biswanath, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh and Nalbari districts. Dhemaji is the worst affected, with over 44,000 people impacted; Dibrugarh has around 4,000 people affected and Biswanath nearly 500, the report said.
ASDMA noted that till Tuesday almost 47,000 people were reeling under floodwaters across the four districts. One death has been reported in this year’s flooding so far.
Officials said immediate priorities include restoring connectivity, ensuring relief distribution, sheltering displaced families and beginning rehabilitation planning once waters recede. The central and state teams will continue damage assessment and coordinate relief efforts in the coming days.
