Assam Floods: Grim Toll — 1 Dead, 46,000+ Affected in 6 Districts
Assam’s flood crisis deepened midweek, with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reporting that nearly 46,000 people across six districts have been affected and one woman was killed after being swept away by floodwaters in Sissiborgaon in Dhemaji district on Tuesday night. Officials and news agency PTI said this is the state’s first recorded flood-related death this year.
Two major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, were reported flowing above danger levels, prompting widespread concern over rising water and further damage to infrastructure in low-lying areas. Rescue and relief teams remained on alert as authorities assessed the stability of river embankments and roads.
ASDMA figures show 46,938 people impacted across 10 revenue circles and 221 villages in Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur and Biswanath districts. Dhemaji emerged as the worst-hit district, with 45,841 people affected, according to PTI. Over 3,809 hectares of cropland remained submerged, threatening rabi and spring-sown crops and local livelihoods.
More than 450 displaced residents were sheltering in four relief camps while six relief distribution centres were operational to provide food, medicine and other essentials. Authorities are coordinating local administration and relief agencies to reach isolated villages and maintain supply lines.
The floods have also taken a heavy toll on livestock and wildlife, with official counts indicating more than 88,000 animals affected across the affected districts. Damage assessments are ongoing to quantify losses to homes, roads and agricultural assets.
State disaster officials say monitoring of river levels and targeted relief operations are continuing. ASDMA and district administrations have urged residents in vulnerable areas to follow evacuation orders and stay informed through official channels as rescue teams work to restore connectivity and assess longer-term rehabilitation needs.
