Arunachal Flood Crisis: Flash Floods Ravage East Siang, Schools Closed
Incessant rain from a cloudburst since Saturday night has triggered widespread flooding across East Siang district and parts of Arunachal Pradesh, damaging roads, bridges, power infrastructure, houses and agricultural land and disrupting daily life. In response to the situation, the East Siang district administration has ordered closure of all schools on June 29 and 30.
The Sibo Korong river, which flows between Pasighat town and the GTC/IN College area, overflowed its banks, washing away sections of local roads and causing severe erosion that damaged residential houses and other properties along its course. Transport in and around Pasighat was disrupted as floodwaters undermined road surfaces.
A stretch of National Highway-13 between Raneghat bridge and Ayeng village was threatened when debris-laden floodwaters flowed onto the carriageway. Zila Parishad member Bomken Tayeng deployed a JCB and labourers to divert the sudden flow through a culvert, averting further damage to the highway.
Road connectivity on the Raneghat–Bodak road was affected by a landslip that deposited debris on the route; the obstruction was later cleared using a JCB arranged by Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng, restoring traffic on the road that links to Upper Siang district. Another section of the Pasighat–Ledum–Tene road near Remi village in Bilat block was washed away by flash floods.
Similar damage to roads, bridges, hotels and homestays was reported from Oyan in the Ruksin subdivision. At Koyu and Kora (Korang), along the East Siang–Lower Siang boundary, floodwaters swept away bridges and damaged several houses in adjacent villages. Power supply was disrupted in multiple areas after electric poles were washed away.
District administration officials are monitoring the situation and have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert until water levels recede and restoration work can begin.
