Free Health Camp for Lerie Residents: Vital Ward Adoption Initiative
Kohima, June 27 — Residents of Lerie availed free healthcare services at a medical camp organised by MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso at Government Middle School, Lerie, as part of a ward adoption activity on June 27. The camp, held under the Local Area Development Programme (LADP), offered consultations, minor surgeries, diagnostic and ultrasound services, ENT examinations and dental check-ups, among other services.
The camp was run in collaboration with the Ward Adoption Committee (WAC) of the District Planning & Development Board (DPDB), Kohima. Dr Ato said the initiative complements the Chief Minister’s Mobile Operation Theatre (CMMOT) programme: “Along with a dedicated medical team, we have conducted camps in 25 locations across the state and performed more than 1,000 operations, including surgeries and dental services,” he said. He added that similar camps will soon cover Lerie Chazou, New Minister’s Hill and New Reserve Colony, and that medical services had earlier been extended to Chandmari and PWD areas in Kohima.
Explaining the scheme, Dr Riku Khutso, EAC (Sadar) Kohima and convener of WAC, said the Village/Ward Adoption Committee is a DPDB initiative under LADP. The programme selects villages and wards across all six assembly constituencies in Kohima district for a series of development and welfare activities each year, overseen by elected representatives and department officials. For the 9th Kohima Town assembly constituency, WAC has adopted Ward 16 — the largest ward under Kohima Municipal Council, comprising Lerie, Lerie Chazou, New Minister’s Hill and New Reserve Colony. “This health camp is above politics and above any agenda,” Dr Khutso said, stressing the priority of bringing health services to residents’ doorsteps.
Ward-16 councillor Aneü Khaming thanked Dr Ato and WAC for adopting the ward, calling the medical camp “a golden opportunity” for the community’s well‑being. The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Nagaland branch, provided cervical cancer screening during the camp. FPAI Nagaland general manager Vincent Belho warned that cervical cancer remains a major public health concern — noting that a woman dies from the disease every 90 seconds worldwide — and urged early detection through regular screening and timely treatment. He also highlighted HIV prevention via Pre‑Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and invited people to visit the FPAI centre at Daklane for screening, HIV testing, PrEP counselling, family planning and related services.
The District TB Centre, Kohima, led by District TB Officer Dr Chibenthung Kithan, participated as part of the ongoing 100‑day campaign for TB elimination, bringing an AI handheld X‑ray unit to screen vulnerable populations. The programme was chaired by Kevilezo, chairman of Lerie Council; Neizekhonuo Tethlem, president of the Women Organization, offered a prayer; and K Wati Tzudir, vice chairman of Lerie Council, proposed the vote of thanks.
