Jyoti’s Gold: India Secure Three More Silvers at World Boxing Cup
Jyoti secured India’s lone gold medal at the World Boxing Cup 2 in Guiyang, China, on June 21, overpowering Uzbekistan’s Farzona Fozilova in the 48kg final with a 5-0 unanimous decision. Fozilova, the reigning World Boxing Cup Brazil gold medallist, was comprehensively outboxed as all five judges awarded the bout to Jyoti.
The emphatic scoreline underlined Jyoti’s control and consistency throughout the final; a 5-0 result in amateur boxing denotes that every judge favoured her performance. Her win provided India its only top-podium finish at the event.
India added three silver medals through strong showings in other finals. Minakshi, competing in the 51kg category, finished second after a 0-5 loss to China’s Wu Yu in the final.
Prachi also took silver in the 57kg division, going down 0-5 to Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova, while in the men’s competition Deepak (70kg) secured a silver after a 0-5 defeat to Kazakhstan’s Ablaikhan Zhussupov. Each of those finals ended in unanimous decisions favoring the opponents.
Overall, India left Guiyang with one gold and three silver medals, highlighting promising performances across weight classes even as several finalists were edged out by clear decisions. (PTI)
