Former Top Cop Thounaojam Brinda Declares Bold Bid for 2027 Manipur
Former Additional Superintendent of Police turned activist Thounaojam Brinda has officially announced she will contest the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections from the Yaiskul constituency in Imphal East. The declaration reaffirms her return to frontline politics and signals her continued challenge to the state’s ruling establishment.
Brinda rose to national attention during her tenure in the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) division, where she led a high-profile 2018 raid that yielded a multi-crore drug seizure and led to the arrest of several influential figures. Her uncompromising stance in what has been dubbed Manipur’s “War on Drugs” made her a prominent public figure.
She later returned her Chief Minister’s Gallantry Medal in protest after a key accused in the case was acquitted, citing alleged state-level political interference in the judicial process. That act drew widespread media attention and underscored her positioning as an outspoken critic of perceived impunity.
After resigning from the police service in 2021 to pursue change within the legislative arena, Brinda contested the 2022 state elections from Yaiskul on a Janata Dal (United) ticket and finished a notable runner-up to the BJP incumbent. Her early announcement for 2027 underscores her sustained political presence in Imphal and frames her as a prominent anti‑corruption voice in the state.
