Arambai Tenggol: Four Held in Arms Loot; ASI Arrested in Hmar Murder
Teams of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Manipur Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) arrested ten people on June 19, 2026, in coordinated operations across Churachandpur, Imphal and Ukhrul districts, the police said. The arrests relate to multiple high-profile probes, including the looting of arms from the 5th India Reserve Battalion (IRB), the rape and murder of a Hmar woman in Jiribam, the Ukhrul Punjab National Bank robbery, the abduction and killing of four Kukis, the April 27, 2024 attack on CRPF personnel at Narainsena, and the June 10, 2024 ambush on the Chief Minister’s convoy.
Four of those detained have been identified by investigators as members of Arambai Tenggol and are accused of involvement in the February 13, 2024 loot of firearms from the 5th IRB at Chingarel Tejpur in Imphal East. The NIA named them as Haorokcham Manaocha, 30, of Sanjenbam Mayai Leikai (Imphal West); Mutum Naoba Singh, 36, of Nambol Oinam Mamang Leikai (Bishnupur); Kangabam Somananda Singh, 41, of Tangkham Awang Leikai (Imphal East); and Ningthoujam Momocha Singh alias Mocha, 37, of Uchiwa Wangma (Thoubal).
The NIA said the 5th IRB case was originally registered at Lamlai Police Station under sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and was re-registered by the agency on July 2, 2025 following central government directions. According to the agency, its probe established the four suspects’ alleged roles in a criminal conspiracy to loot the battalion’s weapons. The suspects were detained in a joint operation on June 19 and, during questioning, allegedly acknowledged membership of Arambai Tenggol and involvement in the incident; the NIA said they were not fully cooperating. The agency sought ten days’ police custody for custodial interrogation and produced the accused before the Duty Magistrate.
In a separate development on June 19, the NIA arrested two men, including an Assistant Sub‑Inspector (ASI) of Manipur Police, in the rape and murder of a Hmar woman in Jiribam district. The accused were identified as ASI Salam Deepak Singh, 35, of Iroishemba Mamang Leikai, and Ningthoujam Boboy Singh, 37, of Leimakhong Prem Nagar. The agency said the victim, identified as Zosangkim, wife of Ngurthansang of Jairolpokpi (Zairawn) village, was allegedly raped and burned alive at her home on the night of November 7, 2024 by armed militants the investigation links to Arambai Tenggol and the Manipur People’s Army. That case was first registered at Jiribam Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Arms Act and the UAPA and was taken over by the NIA on November 11, 2024 after directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The NIA said information leading to the arrest of Ningthoujam Boboy Singh was provided by the CRPF; he was questioned at a CRPF office and reportedly named Salam Deepak Singh. Both were produced before the Duty Magistrate after the NIA sought seven days’ police custody and have been remanded for further investigation. The four other arrests made on June 19 are linked to the Ukhrul PNB robbery, the abduction and killing of four Kukis, the Narainsena attack on April 27, 2024, and the June 10, 2024 ambush on the Chief Minister’s convoy; investigations into all cases remain ongoing.
