Assam Assembly Readies for Crucial 16-Day Session; Budget on July 10
The Assam Legislative Assembly has released the provisional programme of business for its Budget session, which will run from July 6 to July 31 with 16 working days. Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah is scheduled to table the full state budget for the 2026–27 fiscal on July 10. The election for the post of Deputy Speaker is expected to take place during the session.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday, June 18, that debutant BJP MLA Dr Habbey Teron from Amri (ST) will be the ruling NDA’s candidate for Deputy Speaker. Sarma posted on X: “I am pleased to announce that Dr Habbey Teron, Hon’ble MLA from Amri (ST), will be our candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.”
In the same post the Chief Minister highlighted Teron’s background and symbolic importance, saying the medical professional is the first elected representative from the newly created Amri constituency and “represents the aspirations of our tribal communities and will further strengthen the voice of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao in the legislative process.”
Amri (ST) is in West Karbi Anglong district; Teron won the seat in the recent elections by defeating Independent candidate Bikram Hanse by 23,910 votes. BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass was elected Speaker during the inaugural session of the 16th Assam Assembly last month.
The announcement comes after the ruling alliance secured a large mandate in this year’s polls, winning 102 of the Assembly’s 126 seats-BJP 82 (its highest-ever in Assam), and allies AGP and BPF 10 each.
