Historic U.S.-Iran Peace Deal to Be Signed in Switzerland on June 19
Iran’s theocratic rulers face a sharp internal test as the recent three-month confrontation with the United States appears to be over: hardline factions, buoyed by what they see as a victory, are demanding a tough line in upcoming talks and rapid rearmament, while ordinary Iranians are pressing for economic relief and a peace dividend after years of sanctions and a destructive war. The competing pressures leave the leadership with little room for compromise and a high risk of domestic unrest.
Powerful hardliners, energised by surviving the military campaign, want the government to prioritise security and military buildup and to adopt uncompromising positions in negotiations with Washington. Confident they can use force to stamp out dissent, they are pushing the leadership to convert perceived battlefield gains into political leverage.
By contrast, many Iranians are impoverished and angry, hoping any easing of conflict will translate quickly into better living standards, jobs and basic financial relief. After prolonged hardship under sanctions and the added toll of war, expectations for fast improvements are intense and widespread.
Both camps are impatient and increasingly uncompromising, raising the prospect that domestic tensions could flare into renewed mass protests — like the unrest authorities crushed in January, when demonstrators were killed by security forces. How the leadership balances rearmament, diplomacy and economic relief will determine whether Iran moves toward stability or deeper turmoil. —Reuters
