One of three men accused of brutally assaulting farmer and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha founding member Chandra Hang Subba in Soreng district has been arrested, while villagers and the victim’s relatives on Saturday, June 13, 2026, demanded the immediate arrest of the two remaining suspects and a full, transparent investigation. The victim was allegedly attacked near his home at Kholatar Muneeu in the Daramdin constituency a few days earlier and is being treated in hospital for multiple injuries.
Local residents say the attackers fled after women in the area witnessed the assault and raised the alarm. Relatives and people from Thongling, Muneeu Gaon and Karthok gathered at Sombaria police station on June 13 to press police to find and detain the other two accused. They criticised the motive given by the arrested suspect during questioning, which police reportedly said involved a dispute at last year’s Sombaria fair.
Members of the fair’s organising committee, however, told villagers they were unaware of any altercation between the victim and the accused that could explain such violence. “We are really taken aback by the statement made by the accused. Despite being members of the fair’s organizing committee, we have no information about any differences between the victim and the accused that could have led to the brutal assault a few days ago. We demand a thorough investigation,” one villager said.
Sanjay Hang Limboo, the victim’s nephew, called on the state government to ensure the remaining suspects are arrested promptly, describing the attack as “inhuman and life‑threatening” and warning that such incidents set a dangerous precedent for the otherwise peaceful community. “Give us justice. We appeal to the government to ensure immediate justice for the victim, who is an innocent individual devoted to his community,” he said.
Police officials at Sombaria were not reachable for comment. Meanwhile, Sukhim Yakthung Sapsok Songchumbho (SYSS), a Limboo community organisation, condemned the incident as a “heinous and cowardly daylight attack” and demanded a swift, transparent, time‑bound probe free from political or external interference, warning it would oppose any delay or attempt to shield those responsible. Villagers say they will cooperate fully with investigators to ensure all involved are brought to justice.
