Majuli police on Thursday destroyed 1,475.725 litres of illicit liquor, officials said, carrying out the disposal under court orders. A Liquor Disposal Committee, constituted by the district commissioner of Majuli, oversaw the destruction and the seized stock was destroyed in the presence of committee members. Authorities will file a fresh petition with the court to seek approval for disposal of an additional 520.265 litres of seized liquor.
The seizures stem from a series of police operations in recent months, during which large quantities of unlicensed alcohol were recovered from various shops and residences across the district. The disposal followed the legal process required for handling contraband alcohol: seizure, court direction and destruction under committee supervision.
Removing the seized liquor from circulation is part of the broader enforcement effort to curb illegal trade in alcohol in the area. A related report noted that Guwahati police recently seized and destroyed 900 litres of illicit liquor, indicating similar actions in neighbouring jurisdictions.
