60 LPG Cylinders Seized in Bongaigaon, Assam — Black Marketing Probe
Police seized a vehicle carrying about 60 LPG cylinders in Bongaigaon district after local residents in Kirtanpara market detained the truck on suspicion of illegal transportation and possible black marketing on Thursday night. Borghola police were informed by the residents and reached the spot to take custody of the consignment, authorities said.
According to local sources, the cylinders were reportedly loaded from a gas agency in the Panbari area of Chirang district and were allegedly being transported to an individual identified as Salam from Dumuria in Abhayapuri. Residents questioned how such a large consignment was being moved and raised concerns about its intended destination.
The seizure comes amid reports of LPG shortages affecting consumers and several commercial establishments, including hotels and restaurants, in parts of the region. Locals have alleged the cylinders may have been meant for sale on the black market at prices reportedly ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per cylinder; these claims have not been independently verified.
Journalists who arrived to cover the incident have alleged they were prevented from gathering information by police personnel on site. There was no immediate response from the police to that allegation.
An investigation has been opened to determine the legality of the transportation and the true destination of the cylinders. Further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
