Khowai Court Files Chargesheet Against Abhishek Banerjee, Five Others
Agartala, June 10, 2026 — A chargesheet has been filed in a Khowai court in connection with a 2021 municipal election case, marking a new phase in a matter registered as Khowai Police Station Case No. 77/2021 after completion of the police probe. The filing follows a prolonged investigation and advances the case toward formal judicial proceedings.
Named in the chargesheet are several senior Trinamool Congress leaders, including TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen, former West Bengal minister Bratya Basu and MLA Kunal Ghosh. The document also lists former Tripura Trinamool Congress figures Subal Bhowmik and Prakash Das, who are currently associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Police sources said the case was registered during the 2021 municipal election campaign on allegations that a political meeting in the Khowai area was organized without the required administrative permission. The accused have been charged under Sections 186 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, according to the chargesheet.
With the chargesheet now on record, court sources indicated that witness testimonies may be recorded soon. If necessary, the court could issue summons to the accused for their appearance and proceed with further hearings as evidence is taken.
Political observers describe the case as one of the notable legal episodes arising from the intense rivalry and tensions surrounding the 2021 Tripura municipal elections. They say the fact that two individuals named in the chargesheet have since moved from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP adds an additional political dimension to the proceedings.
Police and court sources provided the details released so far; further developments will depend on the court’s scheduling of witness statements and any subsequent procedural orders.
