GANGTOK: The Butterfly Society of Sikkim (TPCF) has accused event organisers of wrongly displaying a cut-out butterfly as the State butterfly, the Blue Duke, during the three-day Sikkim Utsav held at MG Marg from June 5–7, 2026, and demanded an immediate correction. The society said the misidentification misinformed the public and showed unacceptable carelessness by a government department.
The Sikkim Utsav, organised by the State Commerce & Industries department under the RAMP scheme of the Ministry of MSME, aimed to promote local entrepreneurship. Visitors to the MG Marg venue reportedly saw the incorrect butterfly depiction among the event displays.
In a media statement dated June 9, 2026, the Butterfly Society of Sikkim said, “The butterfly displayed during the event at MG Marg is not ‘Blue Duke’ and therefore it reflects wrong information to the public. Distributing wrong information among the public is not acceptable by such distinguished department of the government.” The society described the error as “utter carelessness” in an age of easy digital verification and said it did not expect such negligence from an esteemed government institution.
The group reminded readers that the Blue Duke (Bassarona Durga) was officially declared Sikkim’s State Butterfly on June 5, 2022, World Environment Day, at Saramsa Garden by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay — a designation that reached its fourth anniversary on June 5, 2026. The society stressed that the Blue Duke is a symbol of Sikkim’s natural heritage and a tool for promoting forest and biodiversity conservation.
The Butterfly Society has urged the organisers to issue a public correction, such as a press release, and to avoid similar mistakes in the future, calling misidentification a disrespect to state symbols. It also offered to provide photographs and accurate information about the State Butterfly to anyone interested.
