APDCL Crackdown in Margherita: Over 10 Houses Caught in Power-Theft
The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) carried out a special enforcement drive against electricity theft and meter bypassing on June 3, 2026, in several localities under the Margherita Electrical Sub-Division of Tinsukia district. The operation, led by officials from the office of the Sub-Divisional Engineer, targeted unauthorised connections tapping directly into main distribution lines to curb revenue losses and ensure compliance with electricity regulations.
During inspections across the Margherita sub-division, APDCL teams reportedly detected more than ten households allegedly drawing power illegally by bypassing meters and connecting to the mains. Officials said the suspected illegal connections were identified during systematic raids conducted as part of the anti-theft drive.
As part of the enforcement action, APDCL personnel seized several electrical appliances and materials believed to be used in unauthorised connections. Seized items included ceiling fans, induction stoves, electric wires and pump motors; these were taken to the APDCL office in Margherita for further proceedings and verification.
APDCL officials reiterated that power theft and meter tampering are serious offences under the Electricity Act, 2003. They warned that those found guilty may be liable for prescribed fines and prosecution, which could lead to judicial custody depending on the case and legal outcomes.
Company representatives described the raids as part of ongoing efforts to protect the power distribution network, reduce losses and promote lawful electricity use. APDCL indicated that similar enforcement drives will continue across the region to deter theft and safeguard supply reliability for compliant consumers.
