The West Bengal government has withdrawn Z‑category security for former India cricket captain and ex‑BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, officials say, following a fresh threat assessment and a statewide security review by state agencies. Media reports indicate the decision reduces the level of VIP protection Ganguly had been receiving in recent months.
Ganguly’s security was upgraded from Y to Z category in 2023, when additional police personnel were deployed to tighten protection. Under the Z designation he was provided a dedicated team of around eight to ten officers, armed guards accompanied him for travel within the state, and enhanced security arrangements were maintained at his residence.
Under the new decision, Ganguly will no longer receive the extensive Z‑category privileges such as additional home guards and a personal security officer (PSO). He will, however, continue to receive police protection as required and has been reassigned to the newly determined Y category, meaning routine security cover will be scaled back to match that level.
State ministers have emphasized that the move is not aimed at any single individual but is part of a broader reappraisal of VIP security across West Bengal. Authorities say security levels should be determined by an individual’s current constitutional role, official position and assessed threat level. As Ganguly does not hold a government or constitutional post and the recent assessment found no specific threat against him, officials concluded Z‑category protection was no longer warranted.
The change reflects the government’s wider effort to rationalize VIP security allocations on the basis of present risk and official responsibilities rather than continuing historic arrangements.
