DoNER launches Rs.360cr Mission Sikkim Organics — Transforms Farming
The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) on Monday launched Mission Sikkim Organics, a Rs 360 crore convergence programme to transform Sikkim into a globally integrated premium organic economy, and rolled out four additional Unique Selling Proposition (USP) initiatives for neighbouring states worth a combined Rs 592.79 crore. The new state-specific schemes — announced by Union DoNER minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia — aim to boost cultivation, processing, branding, cold‑chain infrastructure, exports and market access so that greater value reaches farmers and local communities across the Northeast.
In his May message, Scindia said the Tripura Queen Pineapple Mission will receive Rs 236 crore, the Mizoram Ginger Mission Rs 189.79 crore and the Arunachal Kiwi Mission Rs 167 crore; the ministry also launched Mission “Coffees of Nagaland”. Scindia framed the moves as building on Sikkim’s success in organic farming and sustainable development and described the USP drive as a way to create globally competitive value chains rooted in each state’s strengths.
Scindia visited Sikkim from May 14 to 16 and attended the state’s 51st Statehood Day celebrations in Gangtok alongside Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan. Speaking about the visit, he highlighted Sikkim as an example of ecological stewardship, organic agriculture and responsible tourism and said Mission Sikkim Organics will strengthen the state’s premium organic positioning through coordinated investment and infrastructure.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang‑Golay thanked the Union minister for recognising Sikkim’s progress and potential. “We are deeply encouraged by his recognition of Sikkim’s achievements in sustainable development, organic agriculture, ecological stewardship, and responsible tourism,” the chief minister said, adding that the state remains committed to building a stronger, greener and more prosperous Sikkim while contributing to the wider development of the North East.
According to DoNER, the USP programmes were identified after consultations with the respective chief ministers and state governments. Scindia said the ministry, under the central government’s Act East, Act Fast approach and the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, will partner with states, central ministries and stakeholders to help the Northeast emerge as a region of growth, connectivity and opportunity.
