Neiphiu Rio Presses Centre for Urgent Release of Naga Men in Manipur
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has urged the Government of India to take immediate action to secure the release of six members of the Naga community who were reportedly abducted in Manipur, calling the matter urgent and sensitive. Rio said he had spoken by telephone to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on May 29 to convey the anguish and concerns of the Naga community and to press for swift intervention.
In a letter to United Naga Council (UNC) President NG Lohrii, Rio said he sought the Union Home Minister’s “personal intervention and urged that all possible efforts be made by the Government of India to trace the abducted persons, bring the perpetrators to justice, and secure the release of the six abducted persons from the Naga community at the earliest.” According to Rio, Shah assured him the case would be given the highest priority and that concerned agencies would take necessary measures to locate the missing persons and identify those responsible.
Rio also held separate talks with the Union Home Secretary and the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, stressing the need for immediate, coordinated action by all relevant agencies. Both officials, he said, have assured him that efforts are underway to address the situation.
Acknowledging the deep anxiety among the families of the abducted and the wider Naga community, Rio appealed for calm and cooperation while security agencies continue their search and investigative work. He emphasised the importance of maintaining peace in the region during the ongoing efforts.
In his communication to the UNC, the chief minister also urged the organisation to facilitate the safe and unconditional release of 14 Kuki individuals reportedly in its custody. Rio called on all parties to show compassion, forgiveness and a commitment to reconciliation, and warned against actions that could further escalate tensions or undermine human dignity.
