Guwahati: Calls for a separate Bodoland state were revived on Thursday at a meeting convened by the Bodo National Students Union (BoNSU) at the Bodoland Guest House in Guwahati, where leaders and representatives of several Bodo organisations and allied groups discussed renewed strategies to press the demand.
The session, which centred on demands for smaller states across India, was attended by Smaller State Coordination Committee chief convener Sanjay Thulung, BoNSU president Banjit Manjil Basumatary, Bodoland Janajati Surukha Manch working president Daorao Deshrep Narzary, and delegates from multiple bodies. Participants included the All BTAD Gaonburah Association, former members of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), ex-Volunteer Force members and the All Bodo Senior Citizens’ Forum.
Thulung told reporters that organisations advocating smaller states would coordinate to intensify their respective movements and that they planned to open talks with the Central government on the issue. He added that, if necessary, democratic forms of protest could be relaunched to press their demands.
Basumatary said BoNSU would persist in seeking separate statehood, arguing that significant sections of the Bodo community remain dissatisfied with earlier autonomy arrangements under the BAC, BTC and BTR agreements. He indicated the possibility of stronger future initiatives while stressing that Thursday’s meeting represented the first phase of renewed discussions.
Organisers described the gathering as a preparatory step to build unity among like-minded groups and to map a combined strategy going forward, including engagement with the Centre and potential mass mobilisation if talks do not yield satisfactory outcomes.
