Critical Meghalaya Assembly Review of Mawkhanu Stadium & Water Sports
A committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly inspected major sports and tourism infrastructure projects in East Khasi Hills and Ri‑Bhoi on May 26, 2026, including the under‑construction Mawkhanu Football Stadium in New Shillong, an indoor stadium and tennis court at Umsawli, and water‑sports facilities at Umtham. The visit was carried out by the Committee on Government Assurances to review progress and timelines for completion.
The committee was led by chairman Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and included MLAs M Ampareen Lyngdoh, Celestine Lyngdoh and Ollan Singh Suin. Officials from the Sports Department and representatives of the construction firm accompanied the delegation during the inspections.
Tongkhar said the committee was satisfied with the pace of work and expressed hope that the facilities would be finished within the stipulated timeline. He described the Mawkhanu project as a landmark for the state, saying Meghalaya was set to host “the biggest football ground in India.” He added, “We must thank Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for his initiative in bringing this project to Meghalaya.”
The football‑specific stadium at Mawkhanu will have a seating capacity of 40,000 and is being built by KPC Projects Limited. The Rs 732‑crore project is slated for completion by the latter part of 2028 under the tender agreement and forms part of the state government’s plan to develop Meghalaya as a football hub.
At Umtham in Ri‑Bhoi district, the committee viewed a 14‑acre water sports centre where a dedicated canoe slalom course is being developed to boost adventure sports and tourism. That project carries an estimated cost of Rs 21 crore.
During the New Shillong visit, Tongkhar also highlighted ongoing road development and other infrastructure expansion in the area, saying members were surprised by the scale of development. He noted that timely completion would allow residents to fully utilise the new sports and public facilities being created by the state government.
