Kolkata, May 27 — Actor Parambrata Chatterjee on Wednesday approached a vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court seeking to quash an FIR registered last week at Gariahat Police Station (South Division, Kolkata Police). The FIR accuses him of making a provocative social media statement and of instigating post-poll violence after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The petition has been admitted, and the matter is expected to be heard on May 29 before a single-judge vacation bench of Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee; the Calcutta High Court is currently on summer vacation. Chatterjee’s plea asks the court to cancel the police case against him.
The FIR was lodged following a complaint by advocate Joydeep Sen. Based on the same complaint, an FIR was also registered against actress Swastika Mukherjee — daughter of the late Bengali actor Santu Mukherjee — for allegedly endorsing the disputed social media post. Swastika Mukherjee responded to a notice and appeared at Gariahat Police Station on May 23 for questioning; Parambrata did not.
Instead of appearing for interrogation, Parambrata moved the high court. He was present on Wednesday at a meeting called by BJP MLA and actor Rudranil Ghosh at Technicians Studio, where he spoke about why he had outwardly supported the previous Trinamool Congress government. He said, “I did everything by looking at the face of my newborn child and gritting my teeth.” He added that he saw no other option at the time, denied seeking personal revenge, and said he had shared a personal insult because he considered those present like family, hoping such a situation would not recur.
A video clip of these remarks has circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism from many who accused the actor of switching loyalties. The complaint against him was filed soon after the clip gained traction.
The case will proceed in the Calcutta High Court on the scheduled hearing date as the legal challenge to the FIR moves forward. — IANS
