Sarma Hails Tobgay Visit: Assam-Bhutan Forge Stronger Ties
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 26, 2026 thanked Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay for his visit to Guwahati and said the relationship between Assam and Bhutan would be strengthened in the coming days. Responding to Tobgay’s post on X, Sarma said Assam values its “multifaceted partnership with Bhutan,” stressing the state’s commitment to deepening ties across political, cultural and economic spheres. “Thank you for your wonderful visit and the meaningful discussions,” he wrote, adding that Assam would “further strengthen this bond in the coming days.”
Tobgay, who arrived in Guwahati on Monday, May 25, 2026, shared details of meetings with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Sarma, saying the leaders had “reaffirmed our shared commitment to further strengthening the close and enduring ties between Bhutan and Assam.”
On arrival, the Bhutanese prime minister received a formal welcome from Governor Acharya and Chief Minister Sarma, underscoring the region’s close diplomatic and cultural relationship with Bhutan. Tobgay later visited the State Guest House at Koinadhora, where he was received by Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora.
Minister Atul Bora described the Assam-Bhutan relationship as rooted in “mutual trust, harmony and deep socio-cultural ties,” noting that friendship between the two sides has strengthened over generations through people-to-people connections and shared traditions. Bora expressed hope that Tobgay’s visit would open new avenues for cultural exchange, regional cooperation and economic growth.
Senior state officials, including Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and General Administration Department Secretary Narsing Pawar, were present during the reception. The visits and public statements signal both sides’ intent to build on established cooperation and explore broader collaboration in the weeks and months ahead.
