1,500+ Students Rally for Conservation at Manas National Park
More than 1,500 schoolchildren living around Manas National Park have taken part in wildlife and ecological conservation outreach organised by forest authorities under the Manas Mitra Programme (Friends of Manas). Launched by the Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve on November 14, 2024, at the Bansbari range to mark Children’s Day, the initiative aims to strengthen ties between local communities and conservation efforts. Nature-orientation sessions held from February this year across fringe villages covered 22 schools and reached 1,537 students.
Field Director C. Ramesh said the programme was designed to engage students and youth in environmental awareness activities. “Since its launch, the programme has aimed at promoting understanding of the ecological importance of the Manas landscape and encouraging community participation in wildlife conservation,” he said.
The sessions focused on the tiger reserve’s biodiversity and ecological significance, with content on wildlife protection and conservation practices tailored for school audiences. Participating students received animal masks and customised pencils as souvenirs to reinforce learning and create positive associations with conservation.
By introducing local children to the value of the Manas landscape, organisers say the Manas Mitra Programme seeks to build long-term community support for the reserve. Engaging the next generation, forest authorities argue, is a key step toward sustaining wildlife protection and promoting environmental stewardship in areas bordering the park.
