Manipur CM Denounces Terrorism; Congress Calls Govt Silent Spectators
Reported by Bit Irom. Imphal, May 21, 2026 — Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh traded sharp remarks on National Anti-Terrorism Day, with Khemchand urging unity to defeat extremism and Ibobi accusing both the state and central governments of acting as “silent spectators” amid continuing violence in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Khemchand said, “Terrorism remains a grave threat to humanity and must be opposed in every form.” In a social media post he paid tribute to victims, saying, “We pay tribute to all victims of terror and stand in solidarity with their families,” and called on people to “remain united and resolute in our shared mission to defeat terrorism and uphold the values of peace, democracy, and national integrity.”
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee observed the day at Congress Bhavan to mark the 35th death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. While offering floral tributes to Gandhi’s portrait, Okram Ibobi Singh accused the Centre and the state of remaining passive in the face of what he described as repeated incidents of terrorism in Manipur, which he said occur “almost every week.”
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines, Ibobi reiterated the need for a united national response: “Across the entire country, not only in Manipur but everywhere, we must stand united against terrorism.” His remarks come against a backdrop of prolonged insurgency and ethnic tensions in the state.
Manipur’s security challenges stem from complex ethnic rivalries, disputes over land and resources, secessionist movements and porous international borders. The state’s landscape includes a mix of Meitei, Naga and Kuki-Zo militant outfits alongside recent escalations in localized ethnic violence, underscoring the urgency of political and security responses urged by both leaders.
