Tangkhul Villagers Demand IRB Deployment in Sinakeithei after Attacks
A delegation of Tangkhul Naga residents from Sinakeithei Village in Ukhrul district met Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday, urging the deployment of state police units — including the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) — to their village amid ongoing tensions across the state. The group sought immediate strengthening of security, adequate staffing at the Sinakeithei police station and proper functioning of the Sub‑Divisional Collector’s (SDC) office to restore safety and administration in the area.
Accompanied by Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah of the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF), the delegation described repeated armed attacks in recent weeks that have left villagers fearful and distressed. They asked the state to provide humanitarian relief and essential commodities to affected families and to ensure security cover along the road linking Mahadev and Sinakeithei village.
The village authority also pressed for improved healthcare services and broader development measures for the region, describing these as urgent needs alongside security measures. In response to their concerns, Chief Minister Singh called for the disarming of illegal firearms across Manipur and reiterated that peace is the only viable solution to the ongoing crisis.
Singh urged community leaders to dissuade young people from violence and to work toward reconciliation, invoking the example of Nelson Mandela to underscore that peace is possible even after prolonged conflict. He said the state government is prioritising employment by promoting skill‑development programmes aimed at non‑government sectors for youth.
Villagers expressed gratitude for the recent deployment of two Border Security Force (BSF) companies in the Sinakeithei area and welcomed government efforts to build an inter‑village road connecting Sinakeithei to the Ukhrul district headquarters, along with the sanctioning of a Bailey bridge over the Ihang river. The meeting closed with continued appeals for stronger security presence, administrative support and relief for affected residents as the community seeks to recover and stabilise.
