Assam Shelves Satellite-Township Survey Near Tata Amid Tribal Protests
The Assam government on May 18 ordered an immediate halt to a survey for a proposed satellite township near the upcoming Tata semiconductor project in Morigaon district, after protests by Tiwa and Bodo community groups. An official order issued by Morigaon District Commissioner Anamika Tewari said the survey work linked to the township has been cancelled with immediate effect following objections from several organisations.
Administration teams had been carrying out surveys in Sindhisar, Naldhara and Bihita villages near Jagiroad to prepare a relocation and rehabilitation proposal for the planned township. The exercise prompted strong resentment among tribal residents, who said they feared eviction from villages inside the Gobha tribal belt.
The All Tiwa Students’ Union and other tribal organisations held protest rallies over the last three days, demanding complete cancellation of the township project rather than a temporary suspension of survey activity. Community leaders argued the move threatened land rights and local livelihoods.
Officials say the satellite township was being planned adjacent to the upcoming Tata Electronics Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility. The semiconductor unit, being set up with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, is projected to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day using advanced packaging technologies including flip chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP).
The cancellation of the survey reflects immediate administrative response to local opposition, while the broader questions of land, rehabilitation and the township’s future remain unresolved as stakeholders await further consultations.
