Guwahati Urgently Moves Tripura Road Garbage Transit to Panjabari
Residents and commuters on Tripura Road in Guwahati’s Beltola area have long complained about large heaps of garbage dumped along the busy stretch, which currently functions as a transit point for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The accumulation has prompted complaints about foul odours, unhygienic conditions and inconvenience to daily travellers and pedestrians.
The roadside waste has become a visible public-health and sanitation concern for people who use the route every day, with locals saying the piles often obstruct footpaths and attract pests.
Speaking to GPlus, Ward Councillor Ashish Bharali said the transit point will be relocated to a new refuse transfer station–cum–material recovery facility under construction at Juripar in Panjabari. “We will shift this site once the Panjabari facility is ready, which is expected in around six to seven months. Waste from nearby areas will then be processed there, while the remaining waste will be transported to the Boragaon dumpsite,” Bharali said.
GMC officials say the upcoming facility is intended to improve waste processing in nearby localities and to reduce the roadside dumping currently seen on Tripura Road.
A refuse transfer station–cum–material recovery facility typically receives municipal waste, sorts and recovers recyclable or reusable materials for processing, and consolidates the remaining refuse for transport to a final disposal site such as Boragaon. Officials expect these functions to shorten handling times and curb the buildup of garbage along transit points.
For now, Tripura Road remains a temporary transit site for GMC operations until the Panjabari facility is completed and the shift is carried out.
