Brahmaputra Board to Fast-Track Guwahati Flood Control & Restructuring
The High-Powered Review Board (HPRB) of the Brahmaputra Board will hold its 14th meeting in Guwahati on May 19 to review progress on river basin management initiatives and decide the Board’s future course. Union Minister for Jal Shakti C. R. Paatil will chair the session, and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary are also expected to attend, alongside senior central and North Eastern state officials, technical experts and other stakeholders.
The meeting follows a recent reconstitution of the review board that expanded membership to include Sikkim and West Bengal. Officials say the review is significant as the Brahmaputra Board continues its transition into a knowledge-based River Basin Organisation, consolidating technical expertise and data-driven planning across the region.
Delegates will assess ongoing projects across the North Eastern region and West Bengal, including river basin masterplan preparation, flood and erosion management, springshed rejuvenation, drainage development, digital transformation and institutional reforms. The session will also review the implementation of decisions from the previous HPRB meeting and evaluate the Board’s overall functioning.
Key agenda items expected for discussion include organisational restructuring, reforms in masterplan preparation, the revitalisation of the North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute (NEHARI), redevelopment of the Board’s Basistha office complex, and measures to strengthen digital governance and data systems.
Books and documentaries documenting traditional water management practices in North East India are scheduled to be released during the event, underscoring an emphasis on combining local knowledge with technical solutions. The outcomes of the meeting could shape flood mitigation, water resource planning and institutional capacity across the Brahmaputra basin and adjoining states.
