Dzongu Unveils Revolutionary QR System for Real-Time Waste Complaints
The Passingdang block administrative centre on May 14, 2026 launched a QR-code-based real-time waste complaint system for Dzongu, aimed at improving monitoring and rapid response to littering and environmental pollution in the protected Lepcha reserve. The initiative was unveiled by Forest and Environment Minister and area MLA Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, who inaugurated a signage bearing the QR code at the Sangakalang (Upper Dzongu) entry gate.
According to a press release from the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), QR codes have been installed at critical nodes across the area, including arterial roadsides, tourist sites and other public utility locations. Locals and visitors can scan the codes or follow an included WhatsApp link to upload photographs, share location details and submit brief descriptions of trash or pollution incidents.
Complaints may be lodged for plastic waste, cloth and fabric waste, glass bottles, food waste and other forms of litter. The BAC said all submissions will be reviewed promptly and acted upon: “A protocol for prompt action ensures that Plastic Waste Management Unit teams and concerned Gram Panchayats address reported issues within 24 hours,” the release stated.
A monitoring dashboard at the Passingdang BAC will track each grievance from inception to resolution, creating a closed-loop accountability system, officials added. The BAC described the project as a strategic extension of the Plastic Waste Management Unit that strengthens real-time surveillance, fosters local accountability and encourages community participation in keeping Dzongu clean.
Because Dzongu is a restricted and protected Lepcha reserve, non-residents and tourists are briefed on the area’s strict “litter-free” protocol at primary checkpoints at Phidang (Lower Dzongu) and Sangkalang (Upper Dzongu). Visitors are also given brochures outlining cultural landmarks, points of interest and sustainable eco‑tourism guidelines to promote responsible behaviour and help preserve the region’s pristine landscape.
