BRICS 2026 Live: Jaishankar Leads High-Stakes Talks on LPG–Oil Crisis
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday welcomed foreign ministers and delegates to New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, saying the gathering comes at a time of growing global uncertainty and that deeper cooperation among emerging economies is urgently needed.
Opening the meeting, Jaishankar thanked member countries for their continued support during India’s chairship and noted that more than 80 BRICS meetings have already been held with active participation from all members. He said those discussions have strengthened cooperation across sectors and created momentum for further progress.
Jaishankar said India is engaging with partner countries to make the BRICS framework more inclusive and that talks are underway on integrating new members into existing institutional mechanisms.
Pointing to a difficult global environment, he highlighted ongoing conflicts, economic instability and challenges tied to trade, technology and climate as factors shaping international relations. He said there is a growing expectation-especially among developing nations-that BRICS should play a constructive and stabilising role.
Development issues, Jaishankar stressed, remain central. He flagged pressures on energy, food, fertiliser and health security, along with limited access to finance, and said BRICS can help countries respond more effectively to these challenges.
On economic resilience, he underlined the need for reliable supply chains and diversified markets. He also said climate discussions must balance sustainable development with fairness and shared responsibility.
Jaishankar emphasised the growing importance of technology, calling for its use to improve governance and promote inclusive growth. On peace and security, he said recent conflicts have shown the importance of dialogue and diplomacy and urged stronger cooperation against terrorism, describing it as a common concern for all member nations.
He concluded by urging all delegations to engage in open, practical discussions that can deliver tangible outcomes and further strengthen BRICS cooperation.
