The Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the Zomi Re‑unification Organisation (ZRO) on May 11 unanimously resolved not to participate in any programme linked to Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh’s proposed visit to Churachandpur on May 15. The decision followed a joint meeting held at the residence of the ZRO president that began at 1 p.m. and ended with the adoption of several resolutions on political coordination, social media monitoring and shared political objectives.
Among the key measures approved was the creation of a Joint Monitoring Cell (JMC) to track and report instances of communal disharmony allegedly being spread via social media, including WhatsApp channels, WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages. The JMC will be staffed by the Information and Public Relations departments of both organisations, with the secretaries of KNO and ZRO jointly overseeing its work. The two groups also agreed to issue a joint press statement about the initiative.
The meeting reaffirmed the common political objective adopted after May 3, 2023: the continued demand for a Union Territory with a Legislature, to remain the collective stance until any future change is agreed upon jointly. Delegates also discussed identity nomenclature: ZRO leaders described the term “Kuki‑Zo” as unacceptable to the Zomi community. It was resolved that the KNO cabinet will first consult with proponents of the term before the issue is revisited in a future joint session. Representatives from the Zomi side suggested using “Kuki‑Zomi” as a term grounded in mutual respect within the joint political movement.
Participants also considered forming a Central Working Committee to coordinate and monitor political dialogue; the ZRO cabinet will examine the proposal before it returns to the joint forum. The meeting closed with the firm resolution that neither organisation will involve itself in programmes connected to the chief minister’s Churachandpur visit scheduled for May 15.
