Trump Rejects Iran Proposal as ‘Totally Unacceptable,’ Tensions Rise
Washington, May 11 — US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to end the months‑long war as “totally unacceptable” on Sunday, offering no substantive details about Tehran’s offer even as a prominent Republican urged consideration of a military response.
“I have just read the response from Iran’s so‑called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform after receiving the Iranian letter, which had raised hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough to end the conflict that began on February 28 and has disrupted a key sea route for global oil supplies, contributing to fuel shortages in several countries.
Earlier, Trump accused Tehran of “playing games” with the United States for nearly 50 years, adding, “They will be laughing no longer!” He told US outlet Axios he found the Iranian letter “inappropriate” and declined to disclose further details about its contents. “I don’t like their letter. It’s inappropriate. I don’t like their response,” he said, later adding, “They have been tapping along many nations for 47 years.”
Trump also said he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday and discussed the Iranian response. “It was a very nice call. We have a good relationship,” Trump said, while stressing the Iran negotiations were “my situation, not everybody else’s.”
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said in a social media post that, despite appreciating Trump’s diplomatic efforts, the combination of attacks on international shipping, assaults on US Middle Eastern allies and what he called a “totally unacceptable response” warranted reconsidering the diplomatic track in favor of military options.
The conflict between the US and Israel and Iran began on February 28; attacks have been paused since April 8 after the parties agreed to a ceasefire.
