Chennai police have arrested a 43-year-old man, identified as Dinesh, on charges of sexually assaulting a 10‑year‑old girl, officials said. Dinesh is reported to be a local leader of actor‑turned‑politician Thalapathy Vijay’s outfit, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The arrest, carried out on Monday night, follows a complaint filed by the child’s family and has sparked widespread shock across the city.
According to police sources, the minor, a resident of Mylapore, had gone to visit a relative in Kasimedu’s Singaravelan Nagar a few days earlier. While the child was playing near the house on a small lane, the accused allegedly took her to his home and sexually assaulted her. The complainants say Dinesh threatened to kill the girl if she told anyone. The child later returned home, disclosed the incident to her parents, and the family reported it to the police.
Police opened an investigation based on the family’s complaint and registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Officers said immediate arrest efforts were complicated because Dinesh was present at a vote‑counting centre, delaying his apprehension. Law enforcement sources confirmed he was taken into custody on Monday night and produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
The alleged assault and the accused’s political links have intensified public concern in Chennai. Authorities have said the investigation is ongoing and that further legal action will follow as evidence is collected. Under Indian law, those accused of crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and prosecutions under POCSO carry stringent penalties if convictions are secured.
