Assam Govt Formation Begins: Surprise as Himanta Biswa Resigns as CM
GUWAHATI — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned along with his council of ministers to the Governor on May 6, 2026, clearing the way for formation of a new state government after the assembly election results. The move follows the National Democratic Alliance’s decisive victory in the 2026 Assam elections, which bookmakers and officials say will see the alliance return to power for a third consecutive term.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office said: “Following the formal notification of the results of #AssamElections2026 and to enable the formation of the new government, Dr @himantabiswa tendered his resignation as Chief Minister along with that of the council of Ministers to Hon’ble Governor Shri @Laxmanacharya54 today at Lok Bhawan.” The resignation was formally submitted at Lok Bhawan to the Governor, the statement added.
The NDA won 102 of the 126 assembly seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged with 82 seats, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland Peoples’ Front secured 10 seats each. With this majority, the alliance will move to complete internal consultations and select its legislative party leader, the first step toward forming the next state government.
Sarma, who was the alliance’s chief ministerial face before the polls, said he would hand over his resignation after the results were officially declared, thereby beginning the government formation process. He confirmed that a meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs will be convened under the direction of central observers J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, who have been appointed to oversee the selection of the legislative party leader. Sarma added he will coordinate with Nadda to finalise the meeting date.
On the opposition front, Sarma noted the new assembly is unlikely to have an official Leader of the Opposition because the Indian National Congress won only 19 seats, short of the 22 required for the post. He clarified, however, that each party will continue to have its own legislative party leader. The next formal steps will centre on the BJP legislative party’s choice of leader and the Governor’s invitation to form the government.
