How RSS Tilted the Balance in West Bengal: Revealing the Deciding Role
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) mounted extensive voter-awareness drives across West Bengal during the run-up to the assembly polls and held hundreds of thousands of small-group meetings, sources told PTI, as its volunteers urged people to vote “without any fear.” According to those sources, RSS swayamsevaks also relayed “valuable feedback” to the BJP on the “people’s pulse” and the “rival’s moves,” helping the party refine its poll strategy.
Party and Sangh workers said their ground campaign contributed to the BJP’s strong showing in the vote count. While counting was still underway, trends at 6 pm on Monday showed the BJP’s candidates had won seven seats and were leading in 204 of the 294-member assembly, prompting a senior BJP leader to tell PTI: “They really worked so hard.” A source in the RSS described the moment as “very emotional,” saying the result would help the state move past “100 years of suffering.”
Sources said RSS volunteers and BJP workers coordinated closely at all levels, working “round the clock” to carry the campaign message into every part of the state. During the elections, RSS workers reportedly held nearly two lakh (around 200,000) small-group meetings to brief voters on poll issues, assure them of their safety, and exhort them to turn out to vote.
The RSS source said that with the formation of a BJP government, West Bengal would begin “marching on the path of progress” and reclaim its “lost glory.” The account underscores the Sangh’s organizational role in voter mobilisation and its function as an intelligence and feedback channel for the BJP during the campaign, according to the PTI-sourced reporting.
The reports also note that the BJP began rebuilding and expanding its presence in the state after the 2021 assembly elections, when it rose to 77 seats from three in 2016, becoming the principal opposition. All quotations and figures in this story are attributed to sources speaking to PTI.
