Assam Elections Reveal Stark Gender Gap: Only 7 of 59 Women Win

Women candidates made only modest gains in the Assam Assembly elections, with just 7 of the 59 women who contested — a low strike rate that underlines a gap between participation and electoral success. The mixed results show pockets of progress but leave broader questions about women’s representation in the state legislature.

Four of the seven victorious women are from the Bharatiya Janata Party: Ajanta Neog (Golaghat), Nilima Devi (Mangaldoi), Rupali Langthasa (Haflong) and Niso Terangpi (Diphu). The Bodoland People’s Front’s Sewali Mohilary won Kokrajhar, the Indian National Congress’s Baby Begum prevailed in Dhubri, and the Asom Gana Parishad’s Diptimoyee Choowdhury secured Bongaigaon.

The elections also featured high-profile first-time women candidates who were unsuccessful. Among them, 27-year-old Kunki Choudhury, presented as a prominent Gen Z contender, lost the Guwahati Central seat to BJP veteran Vijay Kumar Gupta by 61,921 votes — a margin that turned the contest into a stark generational face-off between youth-driven appeal and established political experience.

In Mariani, Gyanashree Bora was defeated by BJP’s Rupjyoti Kurmi, who received 79,632 votes to Bora’s 52,792, winning by 26,840 votes. These decisive margins in some constituencies suggest that name recognition and incumbency remained powerful factors.

While the presence of 59 women candidates demonstrates broader participation, the conversion to only seven winners highlights persistent challenges for women in Assam’s electoral politics. The results will likely prompt parties and activists to reassess candidate selection, campaign support and strategies to translate participation into representation in future elections.
