Prasoon Joshi, the noted lyricist, writer and communications expert, has been appointed chairperson of Prasar Bharati, India’s public broadcaster, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced in an official statement on Saturday, May 2. The appointment names Joshi to lead the autonomous body that oversees All India Radio (Akashvani) and Doordarshan, as the broadcaster navigates rapid technological change and evolving audience expectations.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated Joshi on the appointment, calling him “a rare talent in advertising, literature and cinema whose heart always beats for India.” Vaishnaw praised Joshi’s work for reflecting the spirit of the nation and said he expects Joshi’s leadership to bring renewed energy, clear purpose and a fresh creative voice to Prasar Bharati.
Joshi is widely known for penning songs for numerous popular films and for leading successful advertising campaigns. His storytelling ability and sensitivity to diverse social experiences have earned him recognition across literature, cinema and public communication, and the announcement highlighted his capacity to connect with audiences from varied backgrounds.
Before taking charge at Prasar Bharati, Joshi served as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification’s Mumbai unit from August 2017, where he worked closely with the film industry to strengthen certification processes while balancing creative freedom and regulatory norms. He has also held senior roles in advertising, including chief executive of McCann Worldgroup India and chairperson of McCann Worldgroup Asia Pacific. Since 2016, he has been a trustee of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts.
Prasar Bharati, established under the Prasar Bharati Act of 1990 and functioning as an autonomous public service broadcaster since 1997, comprises two main arms: All India Radio and Doordarshan. All India Radio is one of the world’s largest radio networks, reaching millions in urban and rural areas in multiple languages and dialects. Doordarshan serves as the national television broadcaster, delivering news, education, entertainment and cultural programming to viewers across the country.
Observers say Joshi’s extensive experience across advertising, film and cultural institutions could help Prasar Bharati adapt its content strategy and creative approach at a time when public broadcasting must respond to digital disruption and shifting viewer expectations.
