Chirang Tragedy: Husband Arrested for Woman Hacked to Death
A 44-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her husband following a domestic quarrel at their home in Thuribari in the Mongolian area of Chirang district, Assam, police said on May 2. The accused, 55-year-old Shukur Basumatary, was arrested shortly after the incident, officials added.
According to preliminary information from Bijni Police Station, the incident occurred late Friday night after a naming ceremony for the couple’s granddaughter held at their residence. An argument reportedly broke out between the husband and wife after the family gathering.
Police said that during the altercation Shukur Basumatary, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, attacked his wife, identified as Sabita Basumatary (44), with a sharp weapon. Sabita was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.
Sources told police both husband and wife had reportedly consumed alcohol before the incident. Officers reached the spot on May 2, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
The arrested man remains in custody as investigators from Bijni Police Station continue their probe into the case to determine motive and the exact sequence of events. Authorities say further legal action will follow based on the post-mortem and investigation findings.
