Bangladesh Army Deploys Drone Detection, Jamming on Cantt Roofs
The Bangladesh Army plans to install drone-detection and jamming equipment on the roof of Sena Malancha, a three-storey convention centre inside Dhaka Cantonment, even as reports say the Bangladesh Air Force is poised to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Pakistan Air Force on May 2 to expand cooperation in advanced pilot and technician training. There are no reports of an immediate threat to the cantonment or the venue, but the moves reflect growing institutional focus on counter-drone capabilities and wider defence collaboration.
Army authorities recently hosted three Chinese specialists who arrived in Dhaka on April 27 to deliver a two-day intensive course on drone detection, jamming and spoofing for about 20 officers and soldiers. The training covered integrated C‑UAS/C‑UAV systems-layered setups that use radars, radio‑frequency scanners and electro‑optical/infrared cameras to detect, track and identify unmanned aerial threats, and then apply countermeasures to neutralise them.
Officials described countermeasures in two broad categories: “soft‑kill” techniques such as electronic jamming and signal spoofing that disrupt a drone’s controls or navigation, and “hard‑kill” options like net guns or directed‑energy systems that physically disable or capture a hostile drone. The planned rooftop installations at Sena Malancha would provide localised detection and mitigation across the convention centre and surrounding cantonment areas.
Separately, the training pact with the Pakistan Air Force is being framed within a broader push by the Bangladesh Air Force to revitalise capability development and research and development. BAF officers say the service’s R&D programme has languished for about a decade due to budget constraints, and that cooperation with the PAF could help strengthen technological innovation, maintenance practices, indigenous development and modernisation efforts.
Observers view the BAF‑PAF engagement as part of an effort to diversify military partnerships, deepen defence diplomacy and build a multi‑dimensional training framework to boost self‑reliance in defence technology. Despite the change of government following the February 12 election that brought a BNP‑led administration to power, Dhaka’s armed forces continue to pursue defence ties with Pakistan.
On April 30, a delegation of Pakistan Army officers visited the Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory Ltd (BMTF) complex in Gazipur near Dhaka, observing production processes, discussing potential collaboration and reportedly praising BMTF’s technology and quality standards. BMTF is a state‑owned commercial enterprise managed by the Bangladesh Army and comprises 19 operational factories.
