Bridge Swept Away by Singla River, South Ramkrishnanagar Isolated
Continuous heavy rain has severed road and foot links in parts of Assam’s Sribhumi district, leaving several villages in the southern Ramkrishnanagar area virtually cut off after a temporary footbridge over the Singla River at Anipur was swept away when the river rose sharply following days of incessant rainfall. With the makeshift crossing gone, communication and transport between Anipur and neighbouring areas have been almost completely disrupted.
Villages reported to be facing major difficulties include Anipur, Timukha, Dullavchhara, Nibia and Ratabari. Daily movement has been badly affected, and students, patients, traders and other commuters are struggling to travel for work, education and healthcare.
The current disruption follows the earlier collapse, months ago, of the main concrete bridge linking Anipur and Ramkrishnanagar. In that incident seven vehicles plunged into the Singla River after the bridge gave way, leaving several people injured; the vehicles included two overloaded dumpers, two Alto cars, one Bolero pickup, one Maxima pickup and a motorcycle. Since that collapse, transport connectivity in the area has remained precarious.
After the concrete bridge failed, the administration erected a temporary footbridge to restore limited movement. The recent rise in the river’s water level, however, swept that structure away and further aggravated the isolation of the affected communities.
Local residents say emergency services have been seriously disrupted by the lack of a reliable crossing. They have raised alarm over delays in reaching medical facilities and difficulties in transporting essential goods and supplies to remote villages.
Work on another temporary bridge is reportedly under way, but residents have voiced dissatisfaction with the slow pace of construction, saying the delay is increasing hardship for thousands of people in the region.
The humanitarian and logistical situation remains critical as rainfall continues across the area, and communities wait for a durable restoration of safe transport links.
