Finally, Sikkim University’s New Dawn: 19 Years in the Making

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated Sikkim University’s long-awaited permanent campus at Yangang in South Sikkim on 28 April 2026, marking the culmination of a 19‑year journey since the university’s establishment in 2007, said Dr Indra Hang Subba, Lok Sabha MP and an alumnus of the university. The ceremony gives a physical home to an institution that, its supporters say, has existed in aspiration more than infrastructure for nearly two decades.

Founded in 2007 to expand higher education across the state, Sikkim University operated without a dedicated permanent campus for years, forcing students and faculty to work amid uncertainty. Dr Subba said the inauguration transforms that uncertainty into tangible facilities — classrooms, laboratories, libraries and common spaces — intended to support teaching, research and community engagement across the region.

In his statement, Dr Subba criticised earlier delays in the campus’ construction, attributing much of the slowdown to lack of priority under the previous Sikkim Democratic Front administration led by Pawan Chamling. He framed the new campus as more than brick and mortar: a corrective to years of neglect and a renewed commitment to education as the foundation of social and economic progress.

The campus, Dr Subba added, is expected to nurture a wide range of professionals — administrators, researchers, teachers, artists and entrepreneurs — and to strengthen the link between Sikkim’s cultural heritage and modern academic inquiry. He urged that the inauguration be treated not merely as a ceremony but as a pledge to ensure equal educational opportunity for all children in the state, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dr Subba also paid tribute to the students, activists and community members whose protests, memorandums and persistent demands helped keep the call for a permanent campus alive. He described the opening as a victory of perseverance and hope, and said it signals a new chapter in which education becomes a central pillar of Sikkim’s future development.
