ZPM Triumphs: Secures 17 Seats as MNF Drops to One
The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) registered a landslide win in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections, claiming 17 of the 19 seats, the Mizoram State Election Commission announced on April 27 after counting concluded at the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner’s office. The civic polls had been held on April 21, and counting began at 8 am, proceeding peacefully, State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana said.
The main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), which had won 11 seats in 2021, was reduced to a single ward this time. The Indian National Congress also won one seat, while the Bharatiya Janata Party — which contested 11 wards — failed to win any seats.
The ZPM’s sweep is a dramatic reversal of fortunes: the party had secured only six seats in the 2021 AMC polls, making this result a significant political gain for the ruling party in Aizawl. All three major parties — ZPM, MNF and Congress — fielded 19 candidates each; a total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, contested across the 19 wards.
Six wards were reserved for women, and ZPM won all six reserved seats. Voter turnout in the April 21 civic polls stood at 62.77 per cent, the State Election Commission said, with over 2.39 lakh voters eligible to cast their ballots.
Officials reported that vote counting at the deputy commissioner’s office was conducted without incident and that ZPM took early leads in multiple wards before securing its dominant margin across the city.
The Aizawl Municipal Corporation, established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007, comprises 19 wards. The first municipal polls in 2010 were won by the Congress, while the MNF had previously swept the 2015 and 2021 elections.
