Cole Tomas Allen, the individual suspected of firing shots outside the Washington Hilton’s ballroom during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, was reportedly armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. Interim Washington, DC, Police Chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed that Allen challenged a Secret Service checkpoint by brandishing these weapons.

As law enforcement officers intervened, Carroll stated, “He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives.” The situation escalated when Allen and officers exchanged gunfire, highlighting the immediate danger presented by his actions.

Witness Helen Mabus, a volunteer at the event, recounted that Allen seemed to assemble a “long” weapon in a less monitored area near the terrace entrance before advancing towards the ballroom. “He was in that room… he grabbed it out of a bag or something,” Mabus said, emphasizing that the weapon “didn’t look like a typical gun.” She noted that the suspect was partially shielded from security as he prepared himself, which contributed to the chaos that followed.

Mabus described the gunman firing indiscriminately as guests and staff attempted to flee, recalling, “It just seemed like he was shooting all over the place,” and estimated she heard at least ten shots during the mayhem. With chaos reigning just steps from the ballroom, she chose to run in the opposite direction, unsure if Allen was apprehended in the immediate aftermath.

The quick response from law enforcement resulted in Allen’s arrest, and charges are pending against him for using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. Disturbing images captured the shirtless suspect lying face down on the hotel floor after his apprehension.

The incident unfolded around 8:34 PM local time, coinciding with the dinner service, where President Donald Trump was conversing with prominent attendees. Secret Service personnel swiftly secured Trump and First Lady Melania, alongside Vice President J.D. Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance, escorting them from the ballroom to safety.

A C-SPAN reporter present at the event recounted hearing several shots, stating, “Boom, boom, boom, boom is all that I heard, and many guests ducked under the table.”

Hours later, Trump addressed the press, confirming the gunman’s capture and detailing the events that transpired. He recalled hearing a noise he initially thought was a falling tray but recognized the severity as law enforcement subdued the attacker. “They really got him,” Trump noted, adding that one security officer who was shot at escaped injury due to wearing a bulletproof vest.

This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of public events, particularly in the current climate where security is a paramount concern. As investigations continue, more details will likely emerge about the motivations behind Allen’s actions and the implications for future security protocols at high-profile gatherings.
