
PM to Lead Grand Closing Ceremony for Sikkim’s 50th Statehood
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gangtok on April 27–28, 2026, to preside over the closing ceremony of Sikkim’s 50th Statehood celebrations and to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for development projects worth more than Rs 4,000 crore across the state. He is scheduled to arrive in Gangtok on April 27 at around 3:00 pm and to take part in programme events on April 28, including a visit to the Orchidarium and the main ceremony at Paljor Stadium.
On April 28 the Prime Minister will visit the Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park’s Orchid Experience Centre at about 9:30 am. At roughly 10:00 am he will join the state’s official closing event at Paljor Stadium, where he will address the gathering and formally inaugurate, launch and lay foundation stones for multiple projects spanning infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, urban development, environment, tourism and agriculture.
Key healthcare initiatives include the foundation stone for a 100‑bed Ayurveda Hospital at Yangang in Namchi district and the inauguration of a 30‑bed Integrated Sowa Rigpa Hospital at NIT Deorali, strengthening access to traditional and integrative medical systems. In education, the Prime Minister will open the permanent campus of Sikkim University at Yangang and inaugurate several institutions and facilities: the administrative block of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence at Chakung, Helen Lepcha Medical College at Socheygang, Dentam Professional College in Gyalshing, model residential schools at HeeGyathang, a model degree college at Mangshila, and a monastic hostel‑cum‑classroom at Boomtar Gumpa. An IT‑enabled educational infrastructure programme for 160 schools will also be launched.
Connectivity projects include foundation stones for two hinged double‑lane steel‑arch bridges over the Teesta at Sirwani and Lower Samdong linking Namchi and Gangtok districts, and the inauguration of the widened and strengthened Birdhang–Namchi road via Kitchudumra. In the power sector the Prime Minister will inaugurate upgrades to the transmission and distribution (T&D) network in Gangtok to improve reliability.
Urban and civic works to be inaugurated include the Jan Seva Sachivalaya (Mini Secretariat) at Lumsey, a Civil Service Officers Institute in Gangtok, housing schemes under the Sikkim Urban Garib Awas Yojana at Lingding, police housing and Grade‑C quarters at SAP Pangthang, and the foundation for a Sadhbhav Mandap at MG Marg. Environmental measures include sewerage rehabilitation at Singtam and a pollution abatement project for the Rani Chu–Roro Chu system in Gangtok’s Zone III.
Tourism and pilgrimage investments named for inauguration or foundation include redevelopment of the Ridge Precinct in Gangtok, eco‑tourism facilities at Dodak (Soreng), infrastructure for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra at 18th Mile and Hangu Lake, a Yatri Niwas at Krishna Pranami Mangaldham (Namphing), and an Eco‑Pilgrimage Complex at Silnon (Gyalshing). Agricultural support will be bolstered by the inauguration of the Sikkim IFFCO Processing Plant. The Prime Minister will also open an indoor cricket facility at Mining, Rangpo in Pakyong district.
