Key Update: Centre Acknowledges IIT Demand in Nagaland — No Timeline
S Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), on Thursday shared the Centre’s official response to the long-standing demand for an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Nagaland, saying the government has acknowledged a formal request but offered no timeline for establishment. The Ministry of Education and Development of North Eastern Region, through Minister of State Dr Sukanta Majumdar, noted the matter was raised during Zero Hour on December 4, 2025, with lawmakers pressing particularly on land allotment for a proposed IIT.
The ministry told Jamir that a request received on January 1, 2025 has been acknowledged and is under consideration, but it did not commit to a schedule or next steps for creating an IIT in the state. instead, the Centre emphasised that its current priority is to strengthen and expand existing higher education institutions in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), with a focus on multidisciplinary and quality education.
The response highlighted that Nagaland already hosts centrally funded institutions such as Nagaland University and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland. The government pointed to recent funding and projects aimed at improving higher education access and quality in the state.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), a total outlay of Rs 1,292.16 crore has been approved for 2023–24 to 2025–26. Separately, under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, 39 projects worth Rs 254.06 crore have been sanctioned for Nagaland, including a central share of Rs 229.57 crore. A central share of Rs 130.46 crore under PM-USHA has been released to Nagaland as of March 25, 2026.
Supporters of an IIT in Nagaland say the institute would be vital for strengthening technical education, creating local opportunities for youth, and accelerating the state’s long-term development. For now, the proposal remains under consideration by the Centre without a firm commitment or timeline.
