Thrilling ISL Win: FC Goa Move to 2nd After Beating NorthEast United
FC Goa recorded a third successive win, beating NorthEast United 2-0 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Friday as Dejan Drazic’s 20th-minute strike and a stoppage-time screamer from substitute Mohammed Yasir (90+3) secured all three points. The victory lifts the Gaurs to second in the Indian Super League table with 19 points from 10 matches, one behind leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant (20 points); Mumbai City FC sit close behind on 18, although both MBSG and MCFC have a game in hand.
The match was cagey early as the hosts began brightly but failed to capitalise on chances. Goa opened the scoring in the 20th minute when striker Muhammed Nemil played a cheeky lofted pass from deep to winger Dejan Drazic, whose right-footed finish found the bottom corner. Drazic’s evening was curtailed by an injury six minutes later and he was replaced by Abdul Rabeeh.
Goa continued to probe but could not extend their lead before halftime. Visiting captain Sandesh Jhingan marshalled the defence with a composed display and was awarded Player of the Match for his centre-back performance. NorthEast pushed for an equaliser in the second half but produced only sporadic, low-quality efforts on goal, while Goa’s attacking moves failed to break the deadlock until stoppage time.
Three minutes into added time, wing-back Aakash Sangwan’s left-side cross found Mohammed Yasir on the right; the Manipuri winger curled a superb left-footed strike into the top-left corner after it clipped the inside of the post, sealing a commanding finish for the visitors. The defeat leaves NorthEast United rooted to 12th place with seven points from 10 games and deepens their run of consecutive losses, while Goa’s win gives them momentum as the season progresses.
