IMD Warns of Heavy Rain in Guwahati — Urgent Advisory
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Guwahati over the next three to four days, warning that isolated areas could receive between 7 cm and 20 cm of rain within a 24‑hour period. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also expected, prompting authorities to issue a public advisory urging residents to remain cautious.
Officials warned the intense downpours could cause widespread waterlogging, disrupt traffic movement across the city and increase the risk of localized landslides, especially in vulnerable hillside neighbourhoods.
Emergency response systems have been placed on alert and local agencies are monitoring the situation closely. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has advised residents to take necessary precautions and stay vigilant while the heavy-rain spell persists.
Commuters and travellers have been asked to plan their journeys carefully and to avoid unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall to reduce risk and prevent travel disruptions.
People living in low-lying areas and on slopes were urged to watch for early signs of flooding or slope instability-such as rising water levels, new cracks in the ground or unusual sounds from hillsides-and to move to safer locations if conditions worsen.
Officials said they will share regular updates on the evolving weather situation through the authority’s official website and social media channels to keep the public informed.
