A tragic road accident in Guwahati’s Paltanbazar area has left a one-and-a-half-year-old girl dead and sparked local outrage. Police say the child, identified as Rahela Khatun, was struck by a Mahindra Thar and suffered severe injuries; she was taken to hospital in critical condition but was later declared dead by attending doctors. Her body was sent to Gauhati Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination, officials added.
According to police sources, the Mahindra Thar involved in the collision did not display a valid registration number. Investigators have identified the driver as Mintu Ali and say he is connected to a car dealership. The vehicle has been seized and a formal inquiry into the circumstances of the crash is under way.
The accident provoked strong emotion in the neighbourhood, with a crowd gathering at the scene to protest. Amid the commotion, a local man named Digambar Deka-who by all accounts had rushed forward to help the injured child-was mistakenly accused by some members of the mob. Witnesses and officials said Deka was physically assaulted and his vehicle vandalized before police intervened.
A rapid-response police team later arrived, dispersed the crowd and restored order. Authorities said they are conducting an impartial investigation to establish exactly how the crash occurred and why the situation escalated into violence. The police have pledged that those found culpable will face strict punishment.
The incident underscores ongoing public concern over road safety and the dangers posed by unregistered or improperly operated vehicles. Police appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with investigators as inquiries continue.
